The Nonya cooking ingredient Daun Kaduk or Wild Pepper Leaves is from the Piper stylosum or the Piper
sarmentosum plants, also known in Malay as the Kaduk Hutan, which belongs to the
pepper family. This plant grows commonly in shaded hedge-rows in Singapore and
in the S.E. Asia region.
Daun Kaduk or Wild Pepper Leaves has a mildly bitter taste, and is used finely shredded in Singapore laksa,
and also in Thai and Penang style steamed otak-otak, and other local dishes,
where it is also eaten raw as a kind of salad.
